Birte and Karl Toosbuy’s dream to create a shoe company driven by Danish Design and the philosophy of form follows function. Born in Goodland, Kansas, Milo Baughman and his family moved to California shortly after his birth. At 13, he contributed to the design of his family home in Long Beach, California. I selected the Biom because of its modern styling—it has the suggestion of the “ugly shoe” trend from a few years ago, without any of the ugliness. Where Ecco really shines, however, is in the smart casual shoe—shoes that aren’t quite formal enough to be dress shoes but aren’t informal enough to just be standard sneakers. After serving his military term, Baughman returned to California to study product & architectural design at the ArtCenter College of Design. Shortly after he finished his studies, he was hired to work for Frank Brothers, where he began designing furniture. At age 24, Baughman left Frank Brothers to establish Milo Baughman Design Inc., focusing on creating residential furnishings. It was not long before he began collaborating with other furniture manufacturers, including Glenn of California, where he worked alongside designer, Greta M. Grossman.
Cargo containers, thoughtfully recycled and placed into residential and commercial projects, create a hybrid building system that saves time and money. ECCO’s new studio in Shanghai is built to be a solid platform for design partners, opinion leaders, and consumers to interact with our brand. Our goal is to offer not only a creativity-driven workplace, but also an elevated and immersive space that inspires whoever visits our studio. Zendoo is a socioeconomic design company that first and foremost is in the business of selling high quality design jewellery, bags and interior products. In many ways, they look like any other entrepreneurial company – however, they are set apart by the fact that everything they do has a responsible perspective. Ecco offers dress shoes, sneakers, sandals and more in men’s, women’s, and children’s sizes. The exhibition space also featured design objects made using Ecco's translucent Apparition leather, including large dark-grey curtains and a set of tables and chairs upholstered in the material.
In 1998 the first flagship retail store opened on Oxford Street, in London. By 2000, ECCO owned every step of the production process, from design and leather production to branded retail sales. While I enjoyed wearing the Citytray dress shoe and found it to be as comfortable as comparable dress shoes that I have owned previously, my only qualm with this shoe is that they felt slightly oversized. I suspect I would have been just fine with a sample a half size or full size down from my usual size.
Although I only tested two of the brand’s mens footwear offerings, Ecco creates a wide range of men’s footwear options including dress and casual shoes, sandals, hiking shoes, sneakers, and golf shoes. The brand also carries a range of styles in women’s sizes, including dress shoes with low heels, sneakers, and more. Additionally, the brand also offers stylish footwear options in children’s sizes, meaning Ecco is a one-stop-shop for the entire family, no matter what your family looks like. The Biom 2.1 Low Tex sneaker is a comfortable pair of stylish sneakers. The design of the shoe features a mix of textiles that allow your feet to feel comfortable, protected, and light no matter the terrain.
Though I loved the modern design of the Biom 2.1 Low Tex sneaker, a major misstep is in the overt branding. Whenever possible, I opt for clothing, shoes, and accessories without excessive logos and branding. While the sneakers were comfortable and stylish, the large Ecco logo along the rubber piece on the back of the shoe meant that I only wore it with specific casual and exercise outfits. Although the Biom 2.1 Low Tex sneaker is available in 10 different vibrant colorways, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Ecco’s offerings. The brand currently has 228 different men’s shoe models available.
Even on longer walks, my feet felt well supported, and best of all, there was no break-in period. While the leather feels tough, I get the impression that they will soften over time. During their three years in business, Zendoo has experienced steady growth, and today approximately 9 people work for the design business. None of the employees work even close to full time, but even though the company has a production line to keep up, the two entrepreneurs find a way to make room for the newcomers on their terms. Many of the employees sew leather and textile products, while others are occupied in the company’s kitchen to prepare lunch for their colleagues. The startup business even has its own job consultants who bridge Zendoo with regular companies and pave the way for permanent jobs to employees who are ready to be part of a regular company.
